How donating works

Four steps from contribution to tax credit

  1. Apply before you give

Contact our team to complete an application before donating. This ensures your contribution is set up to earn the Kansas tax credit.

  2. Make a qualifying donation

Give to Renew Kansas Scholarships, an approved organization. Contribute by cash, check, credit card, publicly traded securities, or tangible property at fair market value.

  3. We report to the state

Keep your documentation. Renew Kansas Scholarships submits proof of your donation to the Kansas Department of Revenue.

  4. Claim your credit

The Department of Revenue issues a tax credit certificate through us. File it with your Kansas income tax return to claim 75% of your contribution.

Know before you give

The TCLISS program is generous by design and specific by statute. Here is what every Kansas contributor should know.

A 75% state tax credit

The tax credit equals 75% of the amount you contribute during the taxable year — one of the most generous scholarship tax credits in the country.

Caps & donor limits

Kansas sets a statewide annual cap of $10 million in available credits, with an individual donor limit of $500,000 per tax year.

Unused credit carries forward

Excess credits may be carried forward to future tax years, following Kansas Department of Revenue rules.

Scholarships up to $8,000

Scholarships may not exceed $8,000 per eligible student per school year, and may not exceed the actual cost of tuition, fees, and qualified expenses.
